With MuseStorm's Platform, you can produce, deliver, manage and analyze metrics for the widgets and social applications you create. Plus, new support for iPhones. Author: Vangie Beal MuseStorm, a company that offers a platform for developing widgets and social...

Marcia Kadanoff, VP of Marketing for MuseStorm, told Ecommerce-Guide that when using the MuseStorm Engagement Platform, small businesses don't have to decide between investing time and money into developing a widget or a Facebook application, but instead can expand their marketing reach to multiple environments using this single development platform.

Once you have created your widget you can easily morph it. You can make small changes or even update your content and use MuseStorm's tools to turn it into a Facebook or Bebo application or a widget for a different platform. The MuseStorm Intelligent Delivery system is the part of the MuseStorm Platform that enables the delivery of your widget across the multiple platforms. These include the desktop, Web sites, instant messaging and mobile platforms — all with a single click during production. Your widets can also be syndicated to a variety of blogging platforms including Blogger and TypePad or used on start pages like PageFlakes, Netvibes or iGoogle.

MuseStorm also includes a tool called Total Analytics, which is built into the platform and is easily accessed through a Web dashboard. Total Analytics basically tells you how well your widget or application is doing on different platforms during your campaign. Marketers can access the detailed metric reports to see how consumers are interacting with your widget, letting you know what works, what doesn't, and from which delivery platform your content is viewed on the most.

Total Analytics lets you access detailed data such as the geographical distribution, the top Web sites hosting your widgets and daily changes in the top-level domains hosting your widget. You can also see impressions and users per day and per-hour-performance on a variety of social networking sites.

The iPhone Advantage
The MuseStorm Engagement Platform was recently extended to include support for iPhone development and it offers users the option to deliver their content through a Web browser to iPhones. These Web applications can be downloaded through Apple or other means, and when iPhone users receive a widget built using the MuseStorm platform, they point the browser to a location on the Web where a video, slideshow, or an RSS feed can be accessed. MuseStorm widgets are specifically designed to take advantage of the iPhone interface. The widgets mirror the look and feel of the iPhone, and also use the popular iPhone touch-screen navigation system.

One company already using the MuseStorm platform to create their own iPhone widget is Enthiosys Consulting. The company's Innovation Games Web site is what they call a "serious game" that is designed for marketers to better collaborate with customers in determining the right features to build into their products. Using the MuseStorm Engagement Platform, Enthiosys Consulting created an iPhone widget to bring their Innovation Games brand to the attention of iPhone users.

Interestingly enough, Innovation Games believes that some of the most innovative thinkers out there are also iPhone users, so here they are using their iPhone widget to target a broad audience base they believe fit the Innovation Games interest base. Those interested in seeing a widget in action that was developed using MindStorm, can view Enthiosys Consulting's iPhone widget on the Innovation Games Web site.

MuseStorm pricing is based on a CPM rate where you pay only the cost of serving the widget. For small businesses on a budget this means your cost depends on the size of the campaign you plan to run. Also, there is no actual monetary cost incurred to create the widget or social application using MuseStorm's platform, only your own development time investment.

Monthly fees aside, it looks like the cost consumers will pay for the new 3G iPhone isn't that much more than what it costs Apple to make them. iSuppli, a research and advisory firm known for its detailed "teardown"...

Apple's R&D and marketing costs are not factored in. The top five most expensive components are the device's 8GB NAND flash memory ($22), an improved touchscreen display ($20), application processor ($13.50) and digital baseband chip with High-Speed Download Packet Access, known as HSDPA ($15).

iSuppli said the original 8GB iPhone cost Apple about $226 to make, and Apple has since benefited from component price declines for a 23 percent reduction in hardware costs.

"The new iPhone is significantly less expensive to produce than the first-generation product, despite major improvements in the product’s functionality and unique usability, due to the addition of 3G communications," Rebello said.

Apple did not return a request for comment at press time. The company traditionally doesn't comment on details of its product design outside of its events. The 3G iPhone was previewed by CEO Steve Jobs and other Apple officials earlier this month at the company's Worldwide Developer's Conference.

Since its release, the iPhone has received publicity and "buzz" despite a tiny presence in the overall market for mobile phones.

"We don't see Apple becoming a dominant player in market share for the foreseeable future," Rebello said. "But it's an innovator that's helping the market grow and helping to define a lot of advances in user interface."

He said market leader Nokia (NYSE: NOK), for example, has about a 40 share of the market, while the iPhone at 10 million units will reach 1 percent share worldwide.

Of course the iPhone's impact on the market has been impressive given it's only been available for about a year.

Rebello also said the 3G iPhone has some improvements in the touch technology that will help it maintain its competitive advantage. "There are a lot of iPhone wannabes," he said. "But Apple still has an advantage in user interface, and it's kept its sleek design."

Apple CEO Steve Jobs played up corporate interest in the iPhone at the company's developer conference earlier this month when he noted some 35 percent of Fortune 500 companies are already participating in the beta SDK program.

But some analysts are skeptical the iPhone will receive much of a warm welcome in the enterprise, at least from IT departments.

"Apple hasn't been focused on the enterprise for at least 15 years," said Jack Gold., President and Principal Analyst of J.Gold Associates. "Macs got in by default for the graphics department. Now, I'd venture to say if you asked a hundred executives, a high percentage would say they own iPods or equivalent devices, that they use while traveling. Companies are asking 'What can we do to extend the usefulness of these devices?'

"One answer has been podcasts, but the problem is, Apple wants to control everything; it all has to go through the iTunes store. Now that model is being extended to the iPhone. If I'm an IT guy worried about security, I'm not sure I want to distribute applications that way," Gold told InternetNews.com. "Apple hasn't realized it's not enough to offer good products, but to support the IT guys."

Gold also said Apple's frequent product updates, designed to stoke consumer interest in the latest technology, aren't consistent with IT department's expectations. "Large corporations expect that if they buy a thousand of a computer or mobile device, they want them all to be identical over two years," he said. Companies like HP, for example, will guarantee the drivers and other components stay the same."

He also noted the iPhone's lack of encryption features common on other devices favored by IT for security purposes. While the ability to remotely wipe the iPhone's data clean is worthwhile, the user might not realize the device is stolen or lost for days or longer before finally notifying IT. During that time, a thief might access valuable files and even turn off the iPhone's radio, mitigating the kill feature.

I've had one issue with the case. When I first put my iPhone in it, a greasy-watery spot appeared between the touch screen and the inside of the case. The spot changed shape, variously looking like Italy or Florida (see photo) when I used the touch screen.

The engineers at Case Mate said this was because there was grease on the touch screen or inside the Naked Case. I wiped down the screen and inside the case with a moist cloth and alcohol and let them air dry. I had to do this twice before the spot went away.

The case - although stunning looking - picks up fingerprints, but they can be wiped away with a moist cloth. I don't know how resistant the case is to scratches, but after a couple weeks use it is still scratch free.

Putting your iPhone in the naked case is easy - there's even a video on the Case Mate Web site.

Retail cost is $34.99.

Griffin Wave Case
Made out of a polycarbonate material, it protects the iPhone against bumps and scratches. It has a nice contour feel and comes in a variety of translucent bright colors - green, blue, red, and black. Included with the case is a static peel screen protector plus a cleaning cloth.

The case is made in two interlocking curved pieces that snap together. Openings are provided for the volume, mute, headphone jack, SIM card slot, power down, and synching cable so there's plenty of functionality.

It's a nice solid case, that makes you iPhone feel great in your hand. And protects it two.

Griffin Technology is planning to roll out a series of protective cases for Apple's new iPhone 3G. These include next-gen iPhone versions of its Wave, Nu Form, and Elan Clip cases for $24.99 each and the Elan Form model...

Wave for iPhone 3G
Features wave-shaped contours that overlap and interlock see top image). The double-helix closure provides greater surface area to hold the case together, providing greater security and protection. It allows full access to audio jack, volume controls, connectors and touch screen.

The form-fitting case protects with durable polycarbonate at all corners, and is available in four interchangeable colors: black, blue, pink, or white.

Nu Form for iPhone 3G
Nu Form is an impact-resistant, hard-shell case that protects the iPhone 3G in a slim, no-clip design. It includes a rigid, thin screen protector that guards against smudges, scratches and fingerprints, but doesn't interfere with access to the touchscreen.

Its EasyDock design makes Nu Form convenient to charge and sync; just slide open the case bottom and pop the iPhone into its dock -- no need to completely remove it from its case. Nu Form is available in black or white.

Elan Form for iPhone 3G
Elan Form is a hard-shell leather case that snaps snugly around the iPhone 3G and offers triple protection in a slim, no-clip design. It bonds top-grain leather to hard-shell polycarbonate material, encasing the iPhone in two layers of stylish protection. This new revision of Elan Form incorporates Griffin's EasyDock design, allowing users to conveniently dock their iPhone without completely removing the case. Elan Form with EasyDock is available in pink or black.

Elan Clip for iPhone 3G
Elan Clip is an elegant, genuine leather outer case wrapped around an unbelievably durable polycarbonate shell. It features a belt clip that rotates 180 degrees so you can check your iPhone 3G without taking it off your belt.

The clip also locks into an extended position so you can use it as a stand while watching movies. It can be used two ways: carry your iPhone face-in for maximum privacy and protection, or face-out for maximum convenience and access. Elan Clip comes with a static peel screen protector and a premium microfiber cleaning cloth.
